8th Grade Health Homework

Come to health class on Thursday with no brand names or company logos showing.

Respond to the following statement: “Advertising does not really affect me.”

Magazine Advertisement: We will be talking about body image and how the media affects our self-image.  Bring in an advertisement from a magazine that features a model (male or female).  Be prepared to tell us:
•    What product is being advertised?
•    How does the appearance of the model help to sell the product?
•    Who is the ad directed toward? (What group(s) of people are the advertisers targeting?)
•    What other messages (unrelated to the product) do you think people might get from seeing this ad?  (In relation to male/female roles in society, physical appearance, body image, our expectations of males/females, etc.)

Respond to one or more of the following:
1. How is the way you see yourself the same as and/or different from the way others see you?
2. Write about a time when someone did or said something that either raised or lowered your self-esteem.
3. What have you done recently that may have helped someone feel good about him/her self?

Tell me something you would like me to know about you that I don’t already know.

and/or

Ask me something you would like to know about me.

Note: Journal assignments should be at least one paragraph in length and must be either
• hand written in you journal booklet and turned in during class on the day they are due (please date each entry)
or
• emailed to me by 7:00 a.m. on the day they are due (please put “Health Block #” in the subject line).

8th grade health classes begin on Tuesday, December 2. Your homework assignments will be posted on this site, so if you ever forget your assignment, or if you miss a class, you will be able to get your assignment here. I am looking forward to a fun and interesting class!
